Winona Jane Bull is the fifth of eight children born to Daniel Berry Bull and Elizabeth Mary Tantam, both from England; married in England, 1840. After immigrating to America and traveling to Nebraska, the family joined the Allen Taylor Company with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to journey to the Salt Lake Valley.

On 22 September, 1849 while traveling the Mormon Trail and on the banks of the Sweetwater River in Wyoming, Elizabeth gave birth in a wagon to twin girls, Winona and Sophronia. A storm raged and they had to catch the water in pans and buckets. One twin daughter, Minona Jane, died and was buried there.

* Note: Some records show Winona Jane and other records shows her name as Minona Jane.
