William's Story

William was the second child born to Horace Kimball Whitney of Ohio and Helen Mar Kimball of New York. They were married 1846 in Nauvoo, Illinois. The family joined the Heber C. Kimball Company with a desire to go west to the Salt Lake Valley.
It is believed that William was born near the Sweetwater in Wyoming. One week later, he passed away and was buried somewhere along the Mormon Trail by the Sweetwater.
From the diary of Daniel Davis: “Wend 23 We gathered up our teams & Went on our Journey[.] Met Bro Loren Farr[.] he was from the valley to help his Mother in[.] We Went out to the river & found our camp[.] all Were Passed over A high ri[d]ge & came down on the Sweet Water Bottom & camp[.] Bro Hosea [Cushing] & orson [K.] Whitney made A coffin for Sister Hellen[‘s] child[.] it was buried just at dark.”
