William Heber Kemp is the sixth of 11 children born to William Button Kemp and Elizabeth Bilham, both of England. The family immigrated to America sailing on the ship “SS William Tapscott.” After arriving in America, the family traveled to Nebraska and joined the Horton David Haight Company. The Company left on August 10, 1862 with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Along the journey west, 9-year-old William Heber passed away of undocumented causes. He is buried along the Mormon Trail West.
