Thomas was born to Abel Morgan Sargent III from Maryland and Sarah Edwards of Indiana. Abel and Sarah were married in Indiana in 1822.
When Thomas was 2-years-old, his mother Sarah had a falling accident and passed away.
When members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Saints were gathering to go West, men were being recruited for the Mormon Battalion. Abel placed his children with other family and friends and joined the Battalion. After members of the Battalion were released from duty, he traveled to the Salt Lake Valley and then back East to get Thomas and come West.
They joined the Aaron John Sr. Company, leaving Iowa on the June 8. Among others in the company, Abel and Thomas were stricken with cholera (a disease caused from contaminated water or food). Thomas, 12 years old, and his father passed away on June 24. They are buried together in Florence, Douglas, Nebraska.
