Thomas John was the sixth of ten children born to Benjamin Isaac Sr. and Phoebe Davis, both from Wales. After the family left Wales to emigrate to America, they landed on the shores of Pennsylvania. That is where Phoebe gave birth to Thomas. Following his birth, they traveled to Nebraska to join the John Smith Company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley. The company left Nebraska on June 22, 1860.
When the company was somewhere in Wyoming, four-month-old Thomas John passed away. He is buried along the Mormon Trail in Wyoming.
Granddaughter of Phoebe records: “Grandmother Isaac has told me many times how she walked all day carrying her baby, and when they were just two weeks from their journeys end, her little son died and was buried by the wayside, being nearly four months old, as they had been nearly 3 ½ months on the plains.”
