Stephen’s parents were William James Walsh of Ireland and Nancy Faulkner of Canada. Guymon Company to travel west to the Salt Lake Valley.
Stephen, at the age of 17 married Mary Ann in May before the journey began.
Cholera came into the company and infected many Saints. Most of the Walsh family came down with the disease.
Stephen died the 29th of June, and his wife Mary Ann died the 5th of July followed by Stephen's mother who died the 10th of July.
Stephen is buried by the Platte River in Nebraska.
This is a letter written by Nancy's brother James Faulkner:
“From the letter written by James Faulkner who is the uncle of Stephen Welch: "We traveled through this wild extended country till we came to a stream called the “Big Blue”. Here we lost little John, June 27th, Stephen Walsh died June 29th, Mary Ann (his wife) died July 5th, on a stream called the Little Blue 200 miles from the Missouri River. Stephen died July 7th, little Burke died July 9th, Sister Nancy died July 10. Little Burke was buried by her side on the Platte River. The tears are falling on the paper."
