Severin is the son of Hans Christian Olsenhis and Ane Marie Nielsdatter, both from Denmark. After arriving to America and while traveling to Nebraska, Severin's sister and mother passed away from cholera and was buried along the route.

The family journeyed to Wyoming, Otoe, Nebraska to prepare for the trek west. After arriving, 12 twelve-year-old Severin passed away from cholera. He is buried in the Mormon Cemetery at the Wyoming Camp. The next day on August 13, 8166, Hans and the rest of the children left with the Abner Lowry Company for the Great Salt Lake Valley.
