Birth:  August 8th, 1860   |   female   |   in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware

Death:  August 11th, 1862   |   2 years old   |   in Nebraska on the Mormon Trail West

Sarah’s parents are James Henry Hammond of Ireland and Mary Ann Howell of England.

Sarah’s parents traveled over the ocean independently, met each other and married in 1858 in Delaware.

They joined the Ansil P. Harmon Company and departed from Nebraska on August 1 to go to the Salt Lake Valley.

Barely two weeks into the journey, little Sarah came down with diarrhea and passed away.

She is buried in Nebraska on the Mormon Trail.

According to a journal of the journey, it stated:

“Monday 11th at half past Seven.O.Clock we Started out & traveled to Lone Tree 10 Miles. buried [blank space] [Sarah] Hammond died of canker & diarrhoea. P.M. we traveled to foot of Grand Island <10 Miles> & camped for the night. this day made 20 miles.”
