Sarah Elizabeth New Nalder was the second of three children born to Stephen Nalder and Esther New, both from England. The family immigrated to America to join other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in pioneering to the Great Salt Lake Valley. They were a part the Joseph W. Young Company of 1853.

Exhaustive travel, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Sarah Elizabeth, 7-months-old, died and is buried near the Platte River in Nebraska of undocumented causes.
