Frances took the children west and joined with the Joseph Horne Wagon Company which left Florence, Nebraska Territory 1 July 1861.
The day they were to arrive in the Salt Lake Valley, little Sarah died at the mouth of Parley's Canyon.
John A. Clayton, Sarah's brother, later said:
“When we had almost reached our destination and were rejoicing that our journey was nearly done, sorrow again overtook our little family, my baby sister [Sarah Elizabeth Clayton] one year old, lacking just four days, was taken from us on September 13, 1861 in Parley’s Canyon where the road used to leave Parleys to cross over into Emigration Canyon, we buried her there.”
Little Sarah Elizabeth, almost one year old, is buried at the mouth of Parley's Canyon in Utah.
