Sarah Clayton was the last of four children born to Albert Clayton and Frances Ann Higginbottom, both from England. After arriving from England, Albert passed away on July 24, two months before Sarah was born. Frances took her children west to join the Joseph Horne Wagon Company, leaving Florence, Nebraska Territory July 1, 1861. The day the company was to arrive in the Salt Lake Valley, little Sarah died at the mouth of Parley's Canyon.
John A. Clayton, Sarah's brother, wrote: “When we had almost reached our destination and were rejoicing that our journey was nearly done, sorrow again overtook our little family, my baby sister [Sarah Elizabeth Clayton] one year old, lacking just four days, was taken from us on September 13, 1861 in Parley’s Canyon where the road used to leave Parleys to cross over into Emigration Canyon, we buried her there.”
Little Sarah Elizabeth, almost one-year-old, is buried at the mouth of Parley's Canyon in Utah.
