Samuel Orme is the ninth of 13 children born to Joseph Orme and Emily Green, both from England.

The Orme family immigrated from England to America sailing on the Ship “Amazon.” Upon reaching American, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the John W. Woolley Company. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company left for the Salt Lake Valley on August 9, 1863.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Cholera (a bacterial disease caused from contaminated water), had also plagued the Saints as they journeyed.

Samuel, 2-years-old, died on September 28, 1863 and is buried at Bear River Station, Utah territory. He was one of five children from the Orme family who perished along the Mormon Trail.
