Samuel Lock was the sixth of seven children born to Robert Lock and Charlotte Todman, both of England.

Robert, Charlotte and five children immigrated to America sailing on the ship “Amazon.” After arriving in New York, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the Daniel D. McArthur Company bound for the Salt Lake Valley. The company departed Nebraska on August 6, 1863 with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers, especially for children. When the Company was in Nebraska, Samuel’s older sister Hannah passed away. Just 10 days later, her baby brother, Samuel, died also of undocumented causes. He is buried along the Mormon Trail in Nebraska.
