Samuel Hartle is one of four sons born to William Hartle and Elizabeth Williams, both from England. They were blessed to have four sons.
After the Hartle family sailed over the ocean and came to America, they joined the Edward Martin Handcart Company.
After about a month on the Mormon Trail, Samuel’s mother, Elizabeth passed away. She was complaining of “fever and ague”. Some of the children were also feeling the same. Elizabeth was buried by the Mormon Trail and according to one of the childrens’ journals, she was buried without a coffin.
About two weeks later, Samuel’s little 1 year old brother, Ephraim passed away, and they buried him by the Mormon Trail also. Somewhere along the Mormon Trail, 6 year old Samuel passed away and is buried on the trail.
I found no information as to why these deaths occurred, but the whole family had been plagued with “fever and ague” on the journey.
