Ruth Cooper is eleventh of twelve children born to William Cooper and Millizzer Robinson, both from England. After the Cooper family 's immigrated from England to America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the Horton D. Haight Company. On August 10, 1862, they joined members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to cross the plains for the Salt Lake Valley in Utah.

In early September, while in Nebraska, Millizzer gave birth to Ruth. According to family history, the baby lived about three weeks. It is unknown if they were still in Nebraska or entering Wyoming when she died. Ruth is buried on the Mormon Trail.

According to a history on Millizzer written by a granddaughter it reads: “Along this strenuous journey across the plains grandmother gave birth to a baby girl. Her life was very short. She lived approximately three weeks, as grandmother could not nurse her. She often spoke of how it cut her to the very core to hear her baby cry out of hunger, when she had no milk to feed her.”
