Robert McCulloch is the second of ten children born to Henry McCulloch and Mary May Smith, both from Scotland.

As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the McCulloch family immigrated to America sailing on the ship “Hudson.” After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined a wagon train Company led by Captain Holiday.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers, especially for children. Five-year-old Robert fell and was run over by the wagon. He is buried along the Mormon Trail west.

From a family history: “Mary’s son, Robert, stumbled and fell, and the wagon wheel passed over his neck killing him. He was buried on the plains without a coffin.”
