Poul Jensen Andersen is the fifth of six children born to Jens C. Andersen and Karen Johanne Poulsdatter, both from Denmark. After immigrating to America, the family traveled to Nebraska to join the John F. Sanders Company to cross the plains to the Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latte-day Saints. The company departed from Nebraska on July 6, 1863.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Within a few days of beginning their journey, 2-year-old Poul passed away from unknown causes. He is buried in Iowa along the Mormon Trail.
