Phoebe Louisa Mason is the fourth of seven children born to John J. Mason and Emma Cooper, both from England. The family immigrated to America, and with a desire to travel with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Great Salt Lake Valley, they joined the Appleton Milo Harmon Company. The company left June 15, 1853.

Exhaustive travel, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. When the company was near Wyoming, Emma gave birth to a, Phoebe Louisa. The baby lived four days and is buried along the trail in Wyoming.
