Phoebe Cockerhill (Cockerill) is the youngest of seven children born to William Dickins Cockerill Jr. and Amelia Haddon, both from England.

Before immigrating to America, Phoebe’s mother, Amelia, passed away and is buried in England. Phoebe, along with her Aunt Jane Haddon Lines and Uncle John Lines and their children, boarded the ship “Hudson” to sail to America.

After arriving in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the William Hyde Company. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left for the Salt Lake Valley on August 9, 1864.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, premature birth, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. While the company was in Wyoming, 5-year-old Phoebe became severely ill and died. She is buried in Wyoming along the Mormon Trail.
