Baby Girl Osborne was born to David Osborne from Virginia and mother Cynthia Butler of Ohio. Her parents were married in 1828.

The family joined the Thomas C. D. Howell Company to journey west with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint to the Great Salt Lake Valley. Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers.

While on the trek, Cynthia gave birth to a stillborn daughter. The baby is buried somewhere along the Mormon Trail in Nebraska. Her mother, Cynthia, passed away two weeks later.

David Osborn documented the birth in his journal, but did not state the baby’s gender. However, the baby’s sister, Nancy Margaret, records that the baby was a girl.

One of the daughters in the family wrote: “Mother took very sick. We were very uneasy about her, but the next morning they showed us a pretty little girl that was born in the night, but she was dead.”
