Baby Holmes is the youngest of four children born to Robert Homes and Elizabeth Cole from England. Robert and Elizabeth were married in 1838 and immigrated to America. Upon their arrival in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the 1847 Edward Hunter - Joseph Horne Company. It was their desire to journey to the Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

This child, gender unknown, passed away on 1 July 1847 without being named, and is buried somewhere along the Mormon Trail West.

From the company journal: “Sunday 11 Publick meeting, Bro Pratt out of health and did not attend. Elders Taylor, Rich, Grant spoke upon various subjects. A child of Bro Holmes buried today. Been sick for six or eight months. The hunters returned. Killed 3 buffalo; 1 calf.”
