Infant Gardiner, is the only child born to Jesse Gardiner and mother Elizabeth Price Howells from England. The family immigrated from England to America and joined the Darwin Richardson Company to trek west with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The Gardiner’s son was born prematurely on August 17 and lived less than a week. He is buried west of Laramie, Wyoming along the Mormon Trail. His mother passed away a week later.
From Jesse's journal it is recorded: “The child was born Augt 17 & Died on the 29, 1854. The Mother was Buried on a left hand cut of road, travelling West just the East side of the South Pass so called, on the upper side of the road at the entrance of the Road about 270 miles or so from Salt L City. Where the child was buried I cannot recollect, only west of Fort Laramie somewhere between there & Independance Rock.”
