Nephi's parents were Ole Olsen Storødegaarden and Anne Mikkelsdatter Hønsebraaten from Norway.
The family sailed from Norway to America. After their arrival in America, they joined the William Budge Company to journey with other Saints to the Salt Lake Valley. When the company was in Florence, Nebraska, Anne gave birth to their last child, he was number eleven. They named him Nephi.
When they came to America this family took the name of the place where they came from in Norway: Østsinni (Gårder), Norway Gaarder so this child was named Gaarder in the United States. The whole family used this name when their names were recorded crossing the plains with the Mormon Company.
Little Nephi didn't live very long. He was not quite 1 month old when he passed away.
Baby Nephi is buried by the Mormon Trail in Nebraska, around the area of the Platte River.
Niels C. Christensen records in his journal of the journey:
“Wednesday, Aug. 22. We resumed our journey at 6:45 a.m. Ola Gaarder’s child died and was buried. Our journey this day led us over sandy roads.”
