Nephi Aaron Folland was the fourth child born in England to Henry and Harriet Folland. In, June 1864, the Folland family immigrated from England to America. Nephi was 3-year-old when they sailed to America. After arriving, the family took a train and then joined a handcart company with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With their two-wheeled cart pulled by an ox, the journey west to the Salt Lake Valley was slow.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. During the trek, Nephi became ill and died 100 miles from the Wyoming territory. A small grave was dug, his body wrapped in what protective garments were available, and he was buried at Beaver Creek. A fire was built over the grave to destroy evidence of the burial, protecting it from wild beasts.
