Milton Howard Threlkel is the oldest of five children born to George Washington Threlkel and Matilda Jane Crow, both of Illinois.
Excerpt from "Robert Crow--Pioneer of 1847" written by Darlene Chaffin Law: “After joining the Church, the family joined with the Mississippi Company, and started West. They caught up with Brigham Young's Company on June 4 in Ft. Laramie and traveled on into Utah with that company.”
From the history of George and Matilda Threlkel: “On August 11, 1847 the men started to build the walls of the pioneer fort. About five o'clock in the afternoon, Benjamin Brown Crow went to the creek for a pail of water. There he discovered the body of his nephew, Milton Threlkill, (about three years old) lying in the deepest part of the pool near the dam. The child was immediately taken from the water and every means possible was tried to revive him. After an hour or more they had to give up. It was concluded that he had been in the water about ten minutes before he was found. He had been seen playing with his younger brother by the side of the stream, just a short time before. The grief of both of the parents was very great, but his mother became hysterical and could not be consoled.
“The burial took place the following day. The child was buried on his grandfather's lot, nearly opposite the adobe walls of the fort.”
Little 3-year-old Milton is buried in the Old Deseret Village Pioneer Cemetery in Salt Lake City.
