Metta Maria Jensen is the daughter of Lars Jensen and Ane Marie Pedersdatter, both from Denmark. The family immigrated to America and with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joined the Hans Peter Olsen Company. The company left for the great Salt Lake Valley on June 15.

Disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Metta, 16 years old, and her father, fell victim to cholera (a bacterial disease caused from contaminated water) and died in June 1854.

Cholera broke out in the company, there were many who were infected with the disease.

They are buried along the Mormon Trail West.
