Mary Eliza Marsden was the third child born to James Marsden and Anna Eliza Caladene, both from England. The Marsden's emigrated from England by ship with two children. They were in Pennsylvania when she gave birth to Mary Eliza.

A year later on July 1, they and other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined the Ira Eldredge Company left Nebraska to trek west to the Great Salt Lake Valley. One month later on August 4, Mary Eliza passed away and buried near Ash Hollow, Nebraska. Family lore indicates that Anna Eliza was nursing her child as they rode on the wagon and the child died of sunstroke.

The company journal records: “Aug 4th Travelled 4½ h. Nooned near Ash Hollow. Afternoon 3¼ hours Camped on the Platte. Had a Heavy Thunder Storm with Rain”
