Marius was the child of Mette Marie Johnsen, aka Christiansen, and Mikkel Knudsen, both of Vejle, Vejle, Denmark. They never married. Mette became a housekeeper for Anders Peter Rose and they were married in Denmark before they came to America.

During the voyage over the ocean, Marius was very sick. When the ship docked in New York, Marius passed away in Dunkirk, New York. They buried him in the Saint Mary's Cemetery in Dunkirk.

Mette and Anders both joined the Samuel Wooley Company to come to the Salt Lake Valley.

In the journal of Anders, he says that he loved Marius and treated him like his own son.
