Margaret Jensen traveled with European immigrants, many of whom came in 1868 from Denmark aboard the ship “Emerald Isle.” (Specific information could not be found regarding her parents and if she sailed on the “Emerald Isle.”)
After arriving in America, some of the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who were onboard the “Emerald Isle” suffered from Cholera and Typhoid Fever and were detained at “Castle Gardens” and others were quarantined at “Ward's Island,” both in New York. Cholera and Typhoid Fever are bacterial diseases caused from contaminated water or food.
Margaret joined the Fred C. Anderson Company to trek to the Great Salt Lake Valley. While it isn’t confirmed, Magaret may have been traveling with another 16-year-old girl, Karen Jensen. Both girls perished and are buried between Chicago and the Junction.
From the company records: “Since leaving Chicago, three deaths have occurred, namely: Margaret Jenson [Jensen], on the 9th inst., between Chicago and the Junction, at which last named place she was buried.
