Margaret Gourley is the daughter of Paul Gourley and Ellison Jaap, both of Scotland. The Gourley family sailed from Scotland to America with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveling from Great Britain. The Gourley family joined the Edward Martin Handcart Company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley.

Shortly after the journey began, 8-month-old Margaret passed away. While the cause of death is unknown, there was a great deal of illness among the Saints from the beginning of their trek west. Little Margaret is buried by Scotts Bluff in Nebraska.
