Margaret Baird Mathie was the eighth of ten children born to Robert Wood Mathie and Margaret Baird, both of Scotland.

The family immigrated from Scotland to America sailing on the ship “Cynosure.” After arriving in America, they traveled on to Nebraska with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to join a Company bound for the Salt Lake Valley.

Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Days after arriving to the Valley on October 13, Margaret Baird Mathie, 2 years old, passed away on October 29, 1863. She is buried in Salt Lake City.
