Maren Hansen is the daughter of Henrick 'Henry' Hansen and Ane Nielsdatter, both of Denmark. The Hansen family sailed to America on the ship “Emerald Isle.” Many on ship became ill due to contaminated water. Some perished.

After their arrival in America, they journeyed with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Nebraska where they joined the John G. Holman Company. On September 1, 1868, the company left Nebraska for the Great Salt Lake Valley.

Many of the Saints were still feeling the effects of illness acquired while on the ship. As the company traveled west, Maren grew increasingly weak. While in Wyoming, 3-year-old Maren passed away and is buried along the Mormon Trail.
