Lyman was born to Jonathan Calkins Wright from New York and Rebecca Wheeler of Pennsylvania. They were married in 1838 in Illinois. Lyman was the last of eight children.

Lyman’s mother died eight days following Lyman's birth in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Jonathan and children joined other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with the Edward Hunter Company to travel to the Salt Lake Valley. Along the way, 1- month-old Lyman passed away and was buried in Grand Island, Nebraska. According to a report in Rebecca's history, it said that “the trip proved to be too much for the tiny baby.”
