Lucy's Story

Birth:  July 16th, 1858   |   female   |   in Cape Province, South Africa

Death:  July 20th, 1860   |   2 years old   |   in Nebraska

Lucy's parents are Thomas Sandall Sr. and Ann Hill. They were both from England.

Thomas Sr. was called by the English Government to go to South Africa. His mission was to teach the colonists how to care for their gardens and how to farm.

They came to America to join with other Saints in traveling west to the Salt Lake Valley. They connected with the William Budge Company in Nebraska, the company left Nebraska on July 20.

Lucy had just turned two years old when she became sick and passed away.

According to family history:

“Their daughter Lucy took sick and died at the age of 3 years old. They couldn't stop long enough to dig a grave deep enough to hardly cover with dirt, because they knew the wolves would have her out in a few hours. She was buried in Mr. Bodily's bass violin case for a coffin. Her parents were heartbroken at the loss of their daughter under such horrible circumstances.”

Little Lucy is buried somewhere in Nebraska on the Mormon Trail.

(There is a question about the death date of Lucy, but she is listed on the company roster just having passed away somewhere after the time of the company departing Nebraska.)
