Lucy Lines is the sixth of nine children born to John Lines and Jane Haddon, both from England. John and Jane immigrated from England to America with six children, sailing on the ship “Hudson.”
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Disease was prevalent don the ship. Common illnesses included measles, cholera, and dysentery.
After the Lines family arrived in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the William Hyde Company bound for the Salt Lake Valley. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company left Nebraska on August 9, 1864.
The company had not been traveling long when 16-year-old Lucy passed away from the effects of one or more of the diseases contracted during their travels. She is buried along the Mormon Trail in Nebraska. Lucy, her mother, and two brothers would perish before reaching the Valley.
A Lines family map indicates the dates and locations where family died along their journey west. There is also a memorial at the Goshen City Cemetery for all of the family who passed away on the journey west and their parents.
