Louis’ parents were George Handley and Elizabeth Clark, both from England. Louis was the fourth child born into the family.
The Handley's came to America from England, when they arrived in America, they joined the Cyrus H. Wheelock Company to come west to the Salt Lake Valley.
While on the journey west, Elizabeth was with child.
According to Elizabeth's story:
“It was customary for travelers to gather “buffalo chips” for making fires as they walked along. One day as Elizabeth was doing this, she lagged behind the company. It was difficult for her to walk carrying the extra weight of an expected child. When it was discovered she hadn't caught up with the company, a wagon was sent back for her. She was found by the side of the trail. Her baby had been born, but had died.”
The little baby was named Louis.
Louis is buried by the roadside along the Mormon Trail.
