Lars is a son of Jens Larsen and Anne Mette Sophie Pedersen, both of Denmark. The family crossed the ocean to America on the ship “Cavour.” Cholera attacked many of the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and many passed away on the ocean voyage. After arriving in America, the family traveled by train to Nebraska where they joined the Abner Lowry Company bound for the Great Salt Lake Valley. The Company departed Florence, Nebraska on August 13, 1866.

The day the Company departed, 7-year-old Lars Peder passed away from cholera which he had battled while on the ship. His mother, Anne Mette, passed away the same day from the same disease. Lars and his mother were laid to rest on the Mormon Trail in Nebraska.
