Lars Johnsen was born to Karen K Johansen and Peder Johansen of Sjalland Denmark. The Johansen Family immigrated to America on the ship “Emerald Isle.” While on the ship, two of Karen and Peder’s children died and were buried at sea. Many on the ship suffered and died from cholera (a bacterial disease caused from contaminated water).

The family traveled to Nebraska where they joined the John Greenleaf Holman Company. They departed for the west on September 1, 1868. Exhaustive travel, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Lars passed away and is buried along the Mormon Trail, west of Omaha, Nebraska.

From the company records: “Lars Johansen, at Omaha, on the 11th inst., at which place he was buried.”
