Julia Duncan was the first child born to John Duncan and Elizabeth Bowman, both from Scotland. John and Elizabeth immigrated to America and, along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, joined the David Wilkin Company bound for the Salt Lake Valley. The company left June 1, 1853.
On the July 7, Elizabeth gave birth to a premature daughter, Julia. The baby lived for two hours and buried along the Mormon Trail in Nebraska.
Her father’s journal reads: “July 7th - This afternoon my wife (Eliza Bowman Duncan) was confined. Camp halted and she had a daughter born in the 7th month owing to her having to traval day after day. The child lived 2 hours. It was born 3-4 miles from Winter Quarters at a place called Picaninni Springs.”
