Josephine Garff was born to Niels Jørgensen Garff and Marie Jacobsen, both of Denmark.

The Garff family left Denmark and sailed for America. On the ships roster, Josephine is listed as “Trine.” When they arrived in America, the family joined the Matthias Cowley Company along with many other Danish members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They left for the Salt Lake Valley on June 15, 1857.

After the company left Fort Laramie, Wyoming, Niels passed away. They buried him in August in a crude, shallow grave somewhere between the Missouri River and the Rockies (in Laramie, Wyoming).

A couple of days after her father died, 2-year-old Josephine passed away. The cause of death is unknown. She is buried west of Fort Laramie, Wyoming along the Mormon Trail West.
