Josephine’s parents are Rasmus Hansen and Ane Kirstine Pedersen both of Denmark.
Josephine was the third of five children that made the ocean journey with her parents. The Hansens came from Denmark to America and they joined the Joseph Horne Company to come to the Salt Lake Valley. The company departed Nebraska on 27 July 1862.
The journey had just been out on the Mormon Trail for almost 10 days when little Josephine Marie passed away. There is no information found as to why she passed away.
According to an entry in the company journal:
“Wednesday the 6 roled on 10 miles & nooned at Woodriver ford thence 9 miles & camped on wood river[.] <1 child died the 6>”
Josephine Marie was the first recorded death in the company. Three year old Josephine was laid to rest on the Mormon Trail West in Nebraska.
