Josephine Jensen is the second of 11 children born to David Jensen and Berthe Sørine Simensdatter Peterson, both from Norway. After the family immigrated from Norway to America, David and Berthe and little Josephine traveled to Nebraska. There, they joined the Peter Nebeker Company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the company left Nebraska on July 25, 1863.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. Along the Mormon Trail, 9-month-old Josephine Jensen passed away of undocumented causes. She is buried west of the first crossing of the Sweetwater River, Nebraska.
