Josephine Christine Mortensen is the fifth of eight children born to Niels Mortensen and Mettie Hansen, both of Denmark. The Mortensen family immigrated to America, sailing on the ship “Kenilworth.” While crossing the ocean, passengers suffered from illnesses, including scarlet fever.

Upon arriving in America, the family traveled to Nebraska and joined the Peter Nebeker Company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company began their trek on August 7, 1862.

The day before they left, Josephine’s younger sister passed away. Three days later, 4-year-old Josephine followed her in death, most likely from illness suffered while crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Josephine is buried in Nebraska along the Mormon Trail.
