Joseph Willard Lehmberg is the son of Carl August Lehmberg Sr. and Ernestine Amelie Krenky, both from Germany. The family boarded the ship “Kenilworth” and sailed to America. After their arrival they journeyed by train to Nebraska where they joined the Peter Nebeker Company at the outfitting post west of Omaha. Along with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company left for the Salt Lake Valley on August 7, 1866.

When they traveled for almost two weeks, Ernestine gave birth to a son whom they named Joseph Willard. Two weeks later, Joseph passed away. Life was difficult for pioneers crossing the plains, especially for children and newborn babies. Joseph is buried on the Mormon Trail in Wyoming.
