Joseph was the first child of Joseph Stanford and Elizabeth W. Young from England.
They came across the Atlantic Ocean to America to journey to Zion.
They joined the Joseph Horne Company to come west to the Salt Lake Valley. The company left on July 1, 1861 from Nebraska.
When the company was just weeks from entering into the Salt Lake Valley, little Joseph passed away. In company records at that time, there was sickness among the Saints, with the cold nights they were having it was making life on the plains difficult for them.
Little 1 year old Joseph was laid to rest on the Mormon Trail as they came to Millersville in Uinta County in Utah.
In the journal of F. W. Blake, he says:
“Wednesday Sept. 4th A very warm day and the snow melts quickly, forded Black Fork some 3 times. A mule train passed us on its way home. The son of Joseph and Elizabeth Stanford, young Joseph died today. He was a year or so old. His parents are distraught but know they will see him again. Buried outside camp at Millersville Station 18 miles.”
