Joseph Orson Egbert is the fifth of thirteen children born to Joseph Teasdale Egbert of Indiana and Mary Caroline Allred of Tennessee. Joseph and Mary were married in 1840.

In 1849, the Egbert family joined the Allen Taylor Company to travel west to the Salt Lake Valley. In the company journal, they were two weeks out of Kanesville when 6-month-old Joseph passed away of unknown causes. He is buried near the Platte River.
