Joseph's Story

Joseph’s parents are Oswald Owen and Sarah Hannah Taberer of England.
After coming across the Atlantic Ocean to America they arrived in New York. It was here that they were blessed with their first child, a son, Joseph Hyrum Owen.
They then traveled to Nebraska, where they joined the Henry W. Miller Company to travel with other Saints to the Salt Lake Valley. The company left August 5, 1862.
On the 27th of September, Oswald passed away and is buried along the trail west.
The company journal says:
“27th campt near the 3 crossing. here Oswell Owen Ragge [Oswald Owen] died aged 22 years. Left a young Wife.”
Ten days later, Sarah's little one year old son Joseph passed away also. Little Joseph is buried west of Green River in Wyoming.
From a journal on the journey West:
“7th Arrived at Hams fork here we saw 3 Bridges & a Road about a quarter of mile made by the men comeing down in the Spring when the waters was out. here we Buried a child a Son [Joseph Hyrum] of Oswald & Sarah H. Owens.”
