Joseph Edwin Lines is the youngest of nine children born to John Lines and Jane Haddon, both from England. John and Jane brought immigrate from England to America with six children, sailing on the ship “Hudson.”
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. There was a great deal of disease and illness on the ship, including measles, cholera, and dysentery.
After the Lines family arrived in America, they traveled to Nebraska and joined the William Hyde Company to journey west to the Salt Lake Valley. With other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Company left Nebraska on August 9, 1864.
While traveling east of Plum Creek, Nebraska, 8-year-old Joseph passed away from the effects of diseases they family had been exposed to earlier in the trip. He is buried near Plum Creek, Nebraska. He followed an older brother and sister in death. His mother passed away three days after him.
A map indicates dates and locations of lost family members. There is also a memorial at the Goshen City Cemetery for family who passed away on the journey west and the parents.
