John H. George is the son of Mary Ann George from England. (There is no record of his father.) Mary immigrated to America with her son by sailing on the ship “Hudson.”
After arriving in America, they traveled to Florence, Nebraska and joined the William Hyde Company to journey to the Salt Lake Valley with other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Company left Nebraska on August 9, 1864.
Exhaustive travel conditions, disease, injury, lack of food and medicine, prematurity, and extreme weather were some of the greatest threats to pioneers. The company had only been traveling two hours when baby John passed away. He is buried along the Mormon Trail West.
From the journal of John Lyman Smith: “Wednesday 10th Child died this morning Son of S[iste]r George which was buried by Br. Neslen.”
