John’s parents were Alexander Crabb and Georgina Calder both of Scotland. John Calder was the first of their four children.
Alexander and Georgina joined the church and came to America and lived in Ohio for a few years. Georgina took ill, and passed away from consumption and is buried in Ohio.
Alexander brought the children and joined the Moses Clawson Company to journey to Utah with other Saints.
After crossing the Elk Horn River, two little children came down with scarlet fever.
Eight year old John Calder was one of the ones that passed away from the fever. He is buried by the river.
In a letter from David O. Calder to Brigham Young, he says in part:
“At "Loup Fort" the destroyer made an attack upon the Co. but was repelled with the loss of two children by the scarlet fever.”
