Johannes Peter Bertelsen is the sixth of seven children born to Jens Bertelsen and Ane Jesdatter, both immigrants from Denmark. When Johannes was 15-years-old, he and his family joined other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and immigrated from Denmark to America, sailing on the ship “Humboldt.” After landing in New York, they traveled further west and joined the Christian Christiansen Company of 1857, bound for the Great Salt Lake Valley.

The company arrived in the Utah Territory on 13 September 1857, and that is the date listed as the death date for Johannes Bertelsen.

In some sources his surname is spelled Berthelsen.
